Practical approaches of assessing clinical significance of out-of-range IQC & EQA results

Patient-centered medical laboratory testing requires implementation of rigorous quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results before releasing them to patients.

These measures include Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Assessment (EQA), both evaluated against predefined acceptability criteria.

Unacceptable IQC or EQA results are not problems per se but indicators of underlying issues that may affect patient results.

ISO 15189:2022, particularly clauses 7.3.7.2(g) and 7.3.7.3(h & i), requires laboratories to assess the clinical significance of such errors and determine their potential impact on patient care.

To address this critical aspect, yesterday we hosted our inaugural webinar focusing on various approaches laboratories can employ to assess clinically significant errors.

The session attracted up to 392 participants from 14 countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, facilitated through the Webex virtual platform.

Some of the approaches outlined are; Assessing results based on clinical histories of the patients; % deviation between the failed QC and the last acceptable QC; % deviation of previously analyzed samples and their repeats; % deviation of failed EQA resultsย and PT providers assigned value, among others.

Thank you all who took time off your duties to join us in this webinar.

Much appreciation to our wonderful moderator, Mahlatse Maleka, from the National Health Laboratory Service, Johannesburg, South Africa and my silent co-presenter Abel Chumba of Reliance Hospital who addressed participants questions as the session was going on.

Special thanks to our awesome team led by Anne Mwende for the exceptional behind-the-scenes support ensuring the event’s success.
